Pat Dague Synod 2018
CANA East 2018 Synod-Pat Dague
Every year since its formation, CANA East diocese has had a Synod-usually in the first week of May. I have attended all of them, first at Christ Church Anglican on the Main Line in Wayne, PA, and then the last two years at Church of the Good Shepherd in Binghamton, NY.
As my husband Raymond will attest, I am somewhat of a homebody and travel is not my thing. Yet I love going to synod, knowing what I have to look forward to:
Godly speakers: This year Canon Dr. Ashley Null, a renowned scholar on Thomas Cranmer, spoke of Cranmer’s “gospel” of Divine Allurement: the power of love and grace as we bring the Gospel to the unbelieving world.
His opening prayer before each speaking session really blessed me;
“Heavenly Father, we would see Jesus today, Heavenly Father, we would hear Jesus today, Heavenly Father, we would be moved to love and serve Jesus today.”
Connections: I love the chance to connect with our bishops, with the other churches in our diocese, with clergy and lay people. We get the bigger picture; we get outside of our own particular church.
Perspective: through Bp. Dobbs’ Pastoral Address, we better understand the vision of our diocese to take the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. Bp. Julian used the “I am” statements of Paul found in Romans 1:14-17: I am under obligation... I am eager… I am not ashamed… to help us share the Good News with renewed vigor.
Corporate worship: wonderful times of worshipping together, culminating in the beautiful and very moving service of ordination of four deacons (including one from Church of the Holy Trinity, Syracuse NY, my home church).
In attending Synod, I have always come away renewed, refreshed and encouraged in my faith journey!
