From Jerry Shriver
Janell and I are learning that, much like the Christian walk, the ordination track requires community, too. Since following God's call to seminary in Philadelphia, we've had the blessing of getting to know Revs. Henry and Barbara Jansma as Canon Jansma patiently oversees my ordination process. Our home parish, Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd, and Revs. Matt and Anne Kennedy, have been an ongoing encouragement as they support us in myriad ways. Visiting churches in our archdeaconry, seeing our names on prayer lists, and receiving notes from nearby CANA East congregations have all been humbling reminders that we're in this with people who love us.
We're also learning that what we need most is what everyone needs most - the gospel, every day. I have just completed my second of four years in the Master of Divinity program at Westminster Theological Seminary. It is clear that the Lord brought us here to equip us spiritually, as much as intellectually. We have had lasting spiritual lessons (I almost wrote 'spiritual lesions' - Freudian slip!) in this intense phase of preparation. Time after time, we are thrown back on the gospel and the truth of God's word as the only source of wisdom and strength. What else do we need - and with what else can we minister?
Please pray for us in the day-to-day answering of God's call: me as I balance my roles as husband, father and student; Janell, in meeting all the demands of caring for me, our nine-month old baby, Eliana, and our home; Eliana, as she grows in her awareness of our great God and his world.
